Justin Bieber is a teen sensation. Pattie Mallette was a teen mom.
Mallette, of course, is Bieber's mother. She writes about her difficult childhood in "Nowhere but Up: The Story of Justin Bieber's Mom." Of course, she also writes about the early years of her talented, heart-throbbing, chart-topping son.
But first, Mallette's difficult years. "I've spent most of my adult life sifting through the tangled web of emotional wounds and the debris left by the darkness in my childhood," she writes. Or her co-writer A.J. Gregory writes.
Like many books by high-profile figures, "Nowhere but Up" was written with the help of a co-writer.
Mallette's youth included sexual abuse — by more than one man — alcohol, drugs and a suicide attempt. She got her footing with the help of a Christian counselor. In the book, she writes of the place of faith in her life. "I'm really grateful to God and to all the people who have surrounded me and loved me," she tells USA Today.
"I always wanted to write a book about my story," Mallette says. "I wanted to be as vulnerable as I could, so that young girls who have been through similar things could relate. I pretty much bared my soul. It definitely furthered my healing process."
"The Today Show" website has an excerpt from the book; in it, she describes checking into a home for pregnant girls in London, Ontario in Canada:
"When the car rolled down the small hill of a driveway and all I could see was fading taillights, the floodgates opened. Down tumbled tears of shame. Tears of remorse. Tears of fear. Tears for the unknown. As I gasped for air in the middle of a sob, I forced myself to calm down. All I wanted to do was check in and go to my room where I could be alone. I was engulfed by a sense of loneliness yet wanted to fester in those feelings by myself."
Since then, Mallette's life has changed considerably. The "Extra" show website writes, "While visiting the 'Ellen' show, Mallette revealed she hasn’t had sex since she was 21 and doesn’t plan to until she gets married."
