Justin Bieber's girlfriend, Disney star Selena Gomez, supports West Branch teen humiliated by prank

WEST BRANCH, MI — A Facebook page recruited thousands of supporters for Ogemaw Heights High School sophomore Whitney Kropp, but it’s another social media site that highlighted perhaps her highest-profile advocate yet.

Disney star Selena Gomez this afternoon offered a message on Twitter to Kropp, who was humiliated earlier this month after learning classmates voted her on the school’s homecoming court as a prank.

“Congrats Whitney on making homecoming court, you deserve it,” read Gomez’s message, which was accompanied by a link to a CNN report regarding Kropp.

Gomez, 20, is perhaps best known as the former star of the Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” TV show.

The tweet also has the distinction of separating by one degree Kropp from international singing sensation Justin Bieber, who is romantically linked to Gomez.

Kropp's Ogemaw Heights High School classmates "thought it would be funny if the popularity contest was won by someone who was unpopular," The Detroit News reported Monday.

The story's reach quickly spread beyond Michigan.

NBC's Today show featured Kropp in one segment where the 16-year-old said the prank made her feel like a "piece of trash" and led her to consider, "Why be part ... of this world?"

The news crossed an ocean when the United Kingdom's The Daily Mail detailed the younger Kropp's suicidal thoughts.

Closer to home, The Los Angeles Times — the newspaper of choice in the film capital of the planet — seemed to hint at a potential movie deal for the teen: "You couldn't sell Hollywood on Whitney Kropp's story — the fairy tale ending sounds just too good to be true."

Return to MLive today to read continued coverage of Kropp's homecoming night tonight, including what happens at the game.
