Avril Lavigne has never met her fiancé’s parents

For most couples, the first big step in a relationship is meeting the parents, but apparently newly engaged couple Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger skipped that step.

Last month, Avril and Chad, a couple many didn’t know were even a couple, announced they were engaged after six months. Kroeger popped the question with a 14-carat diamond ring. The engagement came as a surprise not only to fans, but Chad’s parents as well.

"You never know what your parents are going to say when you tell them you're getting married -- especially when it's with someone they haven't met yet!" Kroeger, 37, told Hello! Canada, according to Us Weekly. "My mom is a huge fan of Avril's, so putting her on the speaker phone and telling her the news was hilarious and equally embarrassing."

It may have been embarrassing, but according to Lavigne, 27, everyone is happy about the engagement news, including their parents.

"Everyone is super stoked for us. The reaction from our friends and family has been awesome!" she said.

Avril Lavigne was previously married to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley. They divorced in 2010. Although it is her second trip down the aisle, she is still planning on having a big celebration.

"I know exactly what I want," she said. "I have the whole thing planned out in my head. It will be a huge celebration!"
