Justin Bieber and One Direction face off at 2012 MTV Video Music Awards

Justin Bieber has one direction for himself right now: Winning the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The 18-year-old "Boyfriend" singer adopted the #votebieber Twitter hashtag introduced (along with #voteonedirection) by the VMAs to pit Best Pop Video nominees "Boyfriend" and One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" against one another.

Thanks to almost six million Beliebers and Directioners, "Most Share-Worthy Video" is currently trending on Twitter, though the winner is still too close to call.

But Bieber doesn't just have his eye on taking the VMAs prize from One Direction, he also wants to be included on the show's lineup alongside them.

"i would perform. always ready. #vmas ##votebieber" Biebz tweeted yesterday morning.

The Ontario native has only ever performed at the VMAs once, back in 2010 when he sang a medley of hits from his debut album "My World 2.0" including "U Smile," "Baby" and "Somebody to Love." That year he also went on to win Best New Artist for "Baby."

Besides his nod for Best Pop Video, Bieber's "Boyfriend" will go head to head with fellow Canadian musician Drake's "Take Care" in the Best Male Video category (the former won the same category last year for "U Smile").

The 2012 MVMA awards air live on Sept. 6.
